AKHTC was an initiative by the LINK Team 2011, just after successful completion of the LINK HTC Project at Karikone, Kollam. AKHTC – as the name denotes was a State Level Engineering/Innovation Contest dedicated towards Humanitarian technology challenge. AKHTC served as a platform for Engineering students to realize their ideas into original demo/prototype by using their Engineering/Technical skills for the betterment of humanity.
There were 14 proposals during the initial stage. A Technical committee headed by Prof. Rajesh Kannan shortlisted the top 5 projects among them and they were funded by the IEEE Kerala Section stage by stage. The finals of the contest was held at VAST, Thrissur during the second day of LINK Camp. The students displayed their project demo’s and the participants for the LINK Camp were given the freedom to vote for the best 2 projects.

First Prize – St. Josephs College of Engineering and Technology, Palai
Project : Passenger Safety System
Team – Visakh VS, Vineetha Susan Alexander, Deepu Baby
Summary – Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying. While we all feel confident that we’d be able to escape, the reality of being inside a sinking car is far scarier than can be imagined. The car fills up with water much faster than you’d think, you may be upside down, it’s dark, you’re disoriented, and panic quickly takes over. Your mind will go completely blank and you will be too terrified to even think of an escape way. We have designed a system which can help the passengers to escape from the drowning car. Objectives to be achieved for this are
1) Detect accident
2) Automatically roll down the window
3) Automatically unbuckle the seat belt
4) Automatically open the door (under specific conditions)

Project : P.R.O.T.O.N – Provisional Robot with Omni Telepresence with Operative Navigation

Summary – People talk about environment conservation, how much of us does that today? A Handful maybe. What we think is that saving the planet is a task so tedious, but achievable if every one of us put their effort into it. Well the P.R.O.T.O.N. way of conservation is to reduce the carbon footprint. P.R.O.T.O.N provides a communication platform; P.R.O.T.O.N lets remote workers collaborate with others in ways that a wall-mounted monitor in a conference room could never permit. Embodying a P.R.O.T.O.N, you‟d be able to join important meetings, drop by a co-worker‟s office. You could have tour a distant facility or observe a live demonstration without having to hop on a plane. P.R.O.T.O.N is a telepresence robot which is electromechanical proxy that allows us to be there without actually being there. It brings an intriguing possibility of being able to walk over to a remote place. The problem with commercial telepresence robot is that they are pricey. The one made by Anybot, will sell for close to US $ 15000.Our aim is to build Telepresence robot at low cost. Telepresence system has three essential sub systems.i.e. The home site technology which interfaces to the user and the communication link, the communication link itself which interfaces to the home site and remote site, and remote site technology which interfaces with the communication link and possibly a remote site human.
